Samsung has supposedly taken the path which Huawei took with its flagship P10 and P10 Plus. While buying Huawei P10 and P10 Plus you could get any combination of LPDDR3 or LPDDR4 for the RAM and eMMC 5.1, UFS 2.0, or UFS 2.1 for the storage. It’s called hardware lottery because while buying you are not sure what you are going to get. Even after purchase its difficult to differentiate that whether you got the inferior combination or superior combination. Samsung has done the same and made the Galaxy S8/S8+ purchase a hardware lottery, meaning the one who got UFS 2.0 paid the same price as the one who got UFS 2.1. In this post, we will tell you How to check if Galaxy S8/S8+ is UFS 2.0 or UFS 2.1.
If we see earlier promotional material of Galaxy S8/S8+ on Samsung website, we can clearly see that Samsung boasted of UFS 2.1 clearly, but an XDA Senior Member lch920619x revealed that Samsung has very subtly pulled out the mentions of UFS 2.1. Which clearly indicates that your Galaxy S8/S8+ could feature UFS 2.0 or UFS 2.1. XDA member’s claim is further strengthened by the reports that users are facing the significant difference between sequential read speeds on Galaxy S8/S8+. The UFS 2.1 devices are getting sequential read speeds in the neighborhood of 800 MBps while UFS 2.0 devices are getting sequential read speeds in the range of 500-600 MBps.
However, the difference is not that big and in daily routine users won’t even feel the difference. But still, the buyers deserves to get UFS 2.1 since Samsung boasted about it officially on their website in promotional material. Anyhow, let’s see how you can determine whether you got UFS 2.0 or UFS 2.1 device.
How to Check if Galaxy S8/S8+ is UFS 2.0 or UFS 2.1
Method #1 – How to check if Galaxy S8/S8+ is UFS 2.0 or UFS 2.1
First of all, download and install Terminal Emulator. Launch the terminal emulator and enter the command “cat /proc/scsi/scsi”. This would return the exact model number of your memory chip. If the command returns Model No. ‘THGAF4G9N4LBAIRB’ then you are lucky to get the Galaxy S8/S8+ with UFS 2.1 and if the returned Model No. is ‘THGBF7G9L4LBATRC’ then your device is with UFS 2.0 memory chip.
Method #2 – How to check if Galaxy S8/S8+ is UFS 2.0 or UFS 2.1
You can check your sequential reads on your device by using AndroBench. If the sequential read speeds are between 700-800 MBps then it means your device has UFS 2.1 and if the speeds are in between 500-600 MBps then you got UFS 2.0 inside your Galaxy S8/S8+.
Please let us know in the comments section that did you get the UfS 2.0 or UFS 2.1 Galaxy S8/S8+?
